Treatment of Genital Warts: Common Methods of Treatment

Genital warts can be a very small outgrowth on the genital and anal area or can be large masses of stalk like growths. It is very contagious and can spread very fast, which is why treatment of genital warts should be done as soon as possible. Women who are infected can have it inside or around the cervix or uterus. It also grows on the anus. In men, it can grow on the tip or shaft of the penis and on the anal and scrotum regions. The infection is caused by the human papillomavirus and has no symptoms except for the warts. It spreads through sexual contact and on rare occasions can grow on the mouth area of a person who had an oral sexual contact with an infected partner.

Treatment of genital warts involves vaccination and medical applications that can be done by a doctor or by the patient himself. Vaccination is not a cure though but is a preventive measure to avoid contacting the infection. A less severe infection can be cured by one treatment but widespread and severe infection may require several forms of treatments for the warts to disappear completely.

Podofilox is often a first form of treatment of genital warts because it is relatively cheap. It is sold in a gel or cream form and is applied on the warts directly by the patient. Laser treatments are only availed as a last resort treatment of genital warts since it is very expensive. The process can also be very painful and requires local or general anesthesia.
